This is a brief account of my own experience of being diagnosed with a so called untreatable illness, and how I recovered my life and health in full.
By my late twenties I had what on paper seemed like an enviable lifestyle – I was a successful young man, living in London running my own growing business in a sector that I felt passionate about. I had a healthy, active lifestyle and a good circle of friends and family around me. But something was going wrong behind the scenes – from the age of about 28, I was increasingly prone to bouts of debilitating illness that would leave me exhausted for a week at a time. I seemed to be trapped in a cycle, with each bout repeating the same physical pattern as the one before. Eventually, just before my thirtieth birthday, I developed a virus from which I never seemed fully able to recover.
It was an exhaustion that I could feel like a fog on my brain – my clarity of mind had completely gone. My entire body, and particularly the muscles of my limbs, felt not only leaden, but exhausted to the point of feeling poisoned. Despite feeling almost constantly tired, sleep became elusive. As soon as I closed my eyes, my brain seemed to go into hyperactive overdrive. I developed food intolerances and found it increasingly difficult to digest things that I had previously had no trouble with.
It took six months of tests for the NHS to come to the conclusion that I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Although it almost came as a relief to be presented with some kind of diagnosis at that stage, it also meant that there was very little that the NHS could offer me by way of treatment. I was prescribed sleeping pills and anti-depressants (even though I wasn’t depressed), which ended up making me feel even more desensitized than before.
I heard about the Lightning Process through a friend and remember being both excited and nervous – it sounded like the one thing that could really help me. In January 2009 after having visited many doctors, specialists and undergoing countless treatments and therapies to little or no effect, I booked onto a Lightning Process course in Bristol – I had no idea what was going to happen or how, but I remember feeling great hopefulness mixed with a nagging fear that I wouldn’t be able to do it, and that it wouldn’t work. I was in a group of five, of whom three had been diagnosed with ME, one chronic pain, and the other suffered from acute, debilitating anxiety.
By the end of the first day I was able to walk around Bristol for well over an hour and still feel energized which was a huge step forward. After the end of the second day I went to visit friends for a meal and stayed up chatting till they said they were tired and wanted to go to bed, which was a very nice change!
Over the three days of the course I felt both challenged and empowered – it wasn’t all easy, but by the time I left I felt amazing. I knew that I had everything I needed to remain healthy and energized. The mood at the end of three days was one of complete joy – there was a great feeling of expectation. I felt that I had been given a set of great tools that I could apply in all kinds of different ways. Like most of the people who book onto a Lightning Process course, I had gone in the hope of finding help with a very particular problem – what I came to realise is that the Process can help across all areas of life.
Over the next few years I enjoyed my newly regained health to the utmost – travelling, studying and trying to continue expanding my horizons. I eventually decided that helping others on a similar journey as my own would be a dream job. So I started the rigorous training to become a Lightning Process practitioner myself.
